If found in La Plata County, please bring the animal to our facility. We will scan for a microchip and check our lost reports in hopes of finding the owner.
If found outside of La Plata County, please take to the nearest shelter. It is likely the animal has not wandered too far off from home and the farther away you take the animal the less likely it is to get back home.
If your plan is to claim ownership of the animal until the owner is found, please come by the Humane Society to have the animal scanned for a microchip and leave a found report. Keep in mind that after 72 hours of caring for a stray animal in the State of Colorado you will be considered as the owner. (970) 259-2847
You can call Animal Protection to pick up an animal. Animal Protection is contracted to only pick up dogs or injured animals. Call Central Dispatch to make a report. (970) 385-2900
Please call the Humane Society and other surrounding shelters right away, so we can check to see if your animal is at our facility. (970) 259-2847

La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1973.
It was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, to attempt to find homes for unwanted animals, and to encourage kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education.
The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for the homeless animals. They sell gentle used good that are donated by our community. We accept donations 7 days a week through our donation center on site. The Thrift Store supports local non-profits in the community by donating clothing, toiletries and vouchers to the Volunteers of America (VOA), La Plata Family Coalition and the Women’s Resource Center.
The Shelter & Thrift Store is directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, we added a Medical Director to staff to insure that all animals are health checked, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and have all the care/needs before leaving our facility.
